Cupcakes of Love – a small indulgence for Valentine’s Day

While perusing my Sunday paper this weekend I noticed that all the ads for Valentine’s Day are directed towards men. Men are responsible for finding the perfect gift for their wives, girlfriends and significant others. Lingerie, chocolate, perfume, jewelry, all the usual suspects were featured. I wondered to myself, what kind of Valentine would a man like to receive? Well there are lots of ideas out there-expensive high tech electronics, season tickets to their favorite team, golf at an expensive course. With all the current talk about simplifying our lives and people watching their expenses, I thought about a small, indulgent gift that is made by hand. How would that be received?

There is an adorable and very successful shop in my town called “Icing on the Cupcake.” They only make the most delicious and fancy cupcakes. The owner was kind enough to donate three hundred of these fantastic treats for a recent fundraiser to benefit a non-profit I am affiliated with. As I watched the guests enjoy their dessert, I was struck with how happy these little cakes made people, women and men alike. So I thought I would try my hand at making some of these and sharing the idea with you. You can get small, fancy boxes at specialty shops and party stores. Make one of these fantastic chocolate raspberry cupcakes or red velvet with cream cheese icing, box it up and put it on the front seat of his car before he leaves for work. This would also make a great Valentine’s gift for your children. I took the cupcakes I made to my neighbor, Cate, so she could take them to preschool to share with her friends. Cate is a delightful four year old with a very sophisticated palate. She is a raspberry fan so I knew she would appreciate the chocolate raspberry ones the best!
