Hot Bar-B-Q for A Hot Summer Day

Posted July 23rd, 2010 in In the Kitchen

I know it is a recurring theme- the Sacramento heat! If you lived here you would understand.  In an effort to keep the oven off and the house cool, I am a huge fan of grilling everything and I mean EVERYTHING!  My latest favorite is grilled peaches with some crumbled gingersnaps on top-but I digress. I started out talking about bar-b-que and I have a MILLION great sauces and most of them are fruit based.  I found this interesting recipe a few weeks ago and had to try it.  My daughter Kaitlin volunteered for sous chef duty and I am sure it was because we got a new gadget to try out.  We got an Cuisinart Immersion Blender so we could puree the cherries directly in the saucepan.  Let me tell you this tool is FUN! Of course I didn’t really get to use it much. This recipe contains, of course, Oregon Fruit Cherries but the secret ingredient is Dr. Pepper!  It has a little chili sauce, some jalapeno tomatoes and some cayenne pepper.  It’s really the perfect blend of sweet and hot and went great with a pork loin that we just rubbed with salt, pepper and sage and then grilled to perfection using my new hi-tech electronic digital meat thermometer (a gift from Kaitlin-she loves the kitchen gadgets and gizmos too!).  I sent home some of this sauce to some friends to try out. This particular friend has expressed (on more than one occasion) that he isn’t a fan of fruit with meat.  We didn’t tell him what was in it and he called just RAVING ABOUT THIS SAUCE! You should try it.
